Broadband in Inverness
The UK’s most northerly city, Inverness has long been the home of much of Scotland’s industry, with the whiskey distilling business a cornerstone of the community. Today, the local economy is mainly technology based, with the Centre for Health Science into high-tech research and development.
Stable Scottish broadband
Despite being in the northern, windswept area of Scotland, Inverness boasts a surprisingly good broadband network. With the current influx of new technology jobs in the area, a strong infrastructure is vital to both properties and businesses.
BT plans to bring its superfast fibre-optic broadband to the area within the next few years, meaning that the network will eventually be improved even further. This will be propped up by funds from the Government’s Broadband UK budget.
Speed and Availability
Broadband speed in Inverness has been on the rise in recent years, with the average speed now reaching over 10Mb. The city centre is where you’ll find the most reliable connections, with the Kilmur and North Kessock some of the strongest areas.
The Inverness community is currently campaigning to bring even higher speeds to the city, with the aim of providing 30Mb speed downloads to the majority of the population. If this is completed, Inverness will be the most connected city in Scotland
Providers
Every major UK provider is represent in Inverness, with BT and Virgin Media being the most popular. These firms also offer fibre-optic options in some areas, allowing for much improved speeds.
As well as this, there are providers available who aren’t in other areas of the country, such as Post Office, Fuel Broadband and SSE.
